How Can Your LinkedIn Skills & Endorsements Help You In Your Job Search?

Updated: Sep 15, 2021

I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to choose appropriate skills for your profile and get endorsements for them.

Here is why:

πŸ”˜ Skills are usually the first search criteria for recruiters on LinkedIn, and they allow them to find you based on the keywords those skills represent

πŸ”˜ Having relevant skills listed tells others that you’re proficient at your work, which makes you more attractive to potential employers

πŸ”˜ Skills give you bigger credibility in your field, particularly after you hit the top level of 99+ endorsements

πŸ”˜ The more endorsements you have, the higher you’ll rank in employers search results

πŸ”˜ Recruiters use the number of skill endorsements as a differentiator - if 2 profiles are similar, but one has 50 endorsements for the skill they are looking for, and the other has only 5, they will most likely contact the person with 50

πŸ”₯ How can you make the skill & endorsements sections work for you? πŸ”₯

🟒 LinkedIn allows you to add up to 50 skills to your profile, and those in your network can validate that you have those skills by endorsing you

🟒 These skills are essentially keywords, and since you know how much the #LinkedIn algorithm matters - use them wisely

🟒 Always choose the skills from the options LinkedIn is giving you, let that algorithm become your best friend

🟒 Pay special attention to the first 3 skills (Top skills) – these always get the largest number of endorsements, they are visible to everyone viewing your profile, and it would be wise to list the most relevant 3 skills for your current target position

🟒 You can always add, remove or reorder your skills, depending on your job search strategy and goals

🟒 Remember, your skill endorsements are your social proof, so ask for and accept them strategically – ask for endorsement only people who know you, your work, and your accomplishments; don’t spam your connections to endorse you if you never worked with them

🟒 And, be helpful and always endorse people for those skills you know they have

Like and share if you find it useful for other job seekers too. Have a great week, everybody! πŸ™‚
