Employers…Many of them have people on their teams who have never received any management or leadership training but feel confident enough to make some pretty delusional demands…
LinkedIn profile is your personal profile, and legally (by accepting LinkedIn’s terms and conditions), only you can control or edit what is there. That said, any employer who tries to dictate the activity or content of your profile is acting illegally.
Employers may have legitimate concerns about how their employees represent the company online, so they try to outline expectations for employee behaviour on platforms like LinkedIn (confidentiality, representing the company accurately, avoiding conflicts of interest). And that's fine, and they are generally protected by the code of conduct or civil code.
So, the only way you could get in trouble posting on LinkedIn is by violating nondisclosure information or publishing company proprietary information ( separate articles in your employment contract anyway), which they can compel you to delete, or if the violation is severe - fire you.
But, employers have no legal authority to dictate what you put in your profile or what you post.
If you feel particularly generous, you can add a disclaimer in your LinkedIn About section that any opinion you post is yours and not that of your employer.
This post was inspired by the following questions I received from you:
❓“I have recently joined a company, can my current employer force me to update my current company on LinkedIn?” The answer is “No.”
❓“Can my employer require you to be on LinkedIn and promote the company?” The answer is “No.”
❓“Can a former employer compel me to remove them from my LinkedIn profile after I have left that company? The answer is “No.”
I know many of you are cautious about updating, liking, commenting, or posting on LinkedIn, fearing that your employer might see your activity.
But remember, your LinkedIn profile is an investment in your online reputation, you should own it, and you should always act in a way that boosts your reputation and stays true to who you are. I’m just a chat away if you need me. 💬
